Obstetrics, Midwifery & Childbirth

Return to Obstetrics & Gynecology.

At Berkshire Health Systems, we offer comprehensive and personalized care for pregnancy and childbirth. From your first prenatal visit through childbirth and the postpartum period, our team of obstetricians, midwives, nurses, and staff assure you receive quality care in line with your personal goals and health needs.

Your Birth Experience

Woman in laborBerkshire Health Systems offers two Family Birthplace locations: one at Berkshire Medical Center and one at Fairview Hospital. Each offers a serene environment with private rooms, subdued lighting, infant warmers, and monitoring equipment. Furthermore, we provide specialized operating rooms for Cesarean births. Our delivery services, including anesthesia, are accessible around the clock.

Our nursing and professional staff collaborate closely with  the obstetricians and midwives to accommodate your birthing preferences and needs. Experienced obstetrical nurses and lactation consultants will provide individualized care and guidance to both you and your baby.

Pregnancy Complications

At Berkshire Health Systems, we understand the myriad emotions tied to pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. With the privilege of helping expectant families, we will guide you through this transformative journey. Acknowledging the multitude of questions and concerns that arise, our dedicated team at Berkshire Medical Center is prepared to offer comprehensive support at every step. Whether you enter pregnancy with pre-existing health concerns, or develop a problem in pregnancy, we will create a plan of care to improve your health and wellbeing. We also partner with Baystate Medical Center’s Maternal Fetal Medicine physicians for specialized high-risk care so that you can continue to receive your care close to home at Berkshire Medical Center.

Prenatal Tests & Screening

At Berkshire Health Systems, we offer a variety of tests throughout pregnancy to better understand you and your developing fetus. Blood and urine tests check for or watch for possible health conditions. Ultrasounds assess fetal growth and wellbeing.

A number of early genetic screening tests are available including Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT), which screens for chromosomal abnormalities in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Your obstetrician or midwife will discuss what tests you need, when, and answers any questions that might arise. You can expect to have prenatal tests during each of your three trimesters of pregnancy.

Midwifery

The Midwives at Berkshire OB/GYN of Berkshire Medical Center (BMC) are devoted to addressing the reproductive health needs of individuals in our community. They provide comprehensive care from puberty through menopause including:

  • Pregnancy
  • Labor & Birth
  • Annual Exams
  • Contraceptive Needs
  • Management of Uncomplicated GYN Problems
  • Prescriptions for Medications

Our midwives strive to be your PARTNER in care, not just your provider of care. They spend extra time with you during your appointments, listening to your concerns, and addressing and treating problems. They provide education, suggest resources, or refer you to other health care providers if needed.

Midwives are fully integrated into the healthcare system at Berkshire Medical Center and collaborate with your team of OB/GYN physician colleagues to provide you with the highest quality care.

The Midwives of Berkshire OB/GYN are Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs). CNMs are registered nurses who have completed graduate-level midwifery education and are board-certified by The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). They are health professionals who are fully licensed by the Massachusetts Board of Nursing to deliver comprehensive midwifery care including prenatal, birth, and postpartum care, gynecologic examinations, and family planning services

Awards and Recognitions

We are proud that both Berkshire Medical Center and Fairview hospital have achieved the prestigious international Baby-Friendly designation after a rigorous review process conducted by Baby-Friendly USA, the organization responsible for bestowing this certification in the United States.

This distinguished honor demonstrates that our clinicians are adhering to the highest standards of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. These standards are built on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, a set of evidence-based practices recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for optimal infant feeding support in the precious first days of a newborn’s life.

U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice, has named Berkshire Medical Center as a 2025 High Performing hospital for Maternity Care. This is the highest award a hospital can earn as part of U.S. News’ Best Hospitals for Maternity Care annual study.

Berkshire Medical Center’s Family Birthplace earned a High Performing designation in recognition of maternity care as measured by factors such as severe unexpected newborn complication rates, birthing-friendly practices and transparency on racial/ethnic disparities, among other measures.
